Renting a car in Morocco starts with a complete, consistent set of documents. A missing original, an unreadable licence or a name that does not match the booking can delay pickup even when the reservation has already been confirmed. The exact requirements vary by rental agency, vehicle category, driver age, country of residence and payment method. Use this guide as a preparation checklist, then compare every point with the terms of your specific offer.
Documents commonly requested for car rental in Morocco
A valid driving licence
The main driver normally needs a valid driving licence for the category of vehicle being rented. The name should match the booking and identity document. An agency may also require the licence to have been held for a minimum period or apply different conditions according to the driver's age and vehicle class. Those are contractual policies set by the agency, not a single rule that applies to every rental company in Morocco. Confirm them before paying.
If the agency cannot easily read the language or alphabet used on your licence, ask whether it requires an official translation or an international driving permit. An international permit normally accompanies the national licence; do not assume it replaces the original. Travellers using a foreign licence should request written confirmation from the selected agency before arrival.
A current identity document
A passport or national identity card allows the agency to verify the driver. International visitors commonly present a passport, but the accepted document must still be confirmed with the agency. Check its expiry date, physical condition and exact name. A photo stored on your phone is useful as a backup reference, but it may not be accepted instead of the original.
Your booking confirmation
Keep the confirmation available offline. It should show the reservation number, dates, times, vehicle category, pickup location and agency contact details. It is not proof of identity, but it helps resolve misunderstandings at the desk. Check the selected extras, named driver and return arrangements too. For the complete booking journey, read our guide to renting a car.
An accepted payment method
The rental company may request a card in the main driver's name, advance online payment or another method stated in its terms. Accepted card networks, card types, available balance and any pre-authorisation are specific to the offer. A card that worked online is not automatically sufficient at pickup. Confirm whether debit, credit or prepaid cards are accepted, whose name must appear and whether your bank imposes relevant limits.
Additional evidence for some bookings
Depending on the file, an agency may ask for proof of address, flight details, a return ticket or documents for additional drivers. These requests are neither automatic nor identical across companies. Declare every person who will drive before departure. Each additional driver will generally need an accepted licence and identity document and may have to meet age and licence-holding requirements. Do not let an unnamed person drive unless the contract and agency expressly allow it.
Checklist before you book
- Read the conditions for the specific vehicle and agency.
- Check the driver's minimum age and required licence history.
- Ask whether your national licence is sufficient.
- Confirm the payment method and required cardholder name.
- Check whether a deposit or pre-authorisation applies.
- Declare every additional driver.
- Verify the validity dates of all original documents.
- Request a written answer for any unusual situation.
Review the selected offer before making a payment. RentalMe Morocco is currently accepting early-access requests for a marketplace intended to connect travellers with professional Moroccan rental agencies. It is not yet a public vehicle catalogue. When access is available, the agency supplying the vehicle will remain responsible for availability, required evidence and the contract.
What to check at pickup
Bring the requested originals and read the agreement before accepting the keys. The names, dates, return location, mileage, fuel policy and authorised drivers should match the booking. Ask the representative to explain any unclear item. Review the insurance section carefully, including cover, exclusions, excess and the procedure for a breakdown or accident. Our car rental insurance guide can help you frame the right questions, but the signed rental agreement controls your booking.
Inspect the vehicle with the representative before leaving. Photograph the bodywork, glass, wheels, interior, dashboard mileage and fuel level. Make sure every existing mark is recorded on the check-out report. Keep the contract, inspection record, photographs and assistance number throughout the rental. Repeat the same evidence process when returning the car.
Situations that need advance confirmation
A recent, temporary or damaged licence
Do not assume it will be accepted. Tell the agency what type of document you hold and when it was issued. If a copy is requested, use the official secure channel and conceal information that is not needed where the process allows. Obtain an explicit decision before paying a non-refundable amount.
Different names across documents
Transliteration, double surnames or a legal name change can create differences between a passport, licence and card. Explain the discrepancy and ask what supporting evidence the agency accepts. Do not alter the booking name arbitrarily, because that can create another mismatch at pickup.
A foreign driver or several drivers
State the issuing country of every licence and the expected length of stay. Each driver must satisfy the agency's criteria. Legal driving requirements, the rental company's document policy and its insurer's conditions should be checked separately and then considered together.
Practical questions
Is a digital copy enough?
Not necessarily. It can help you recover a reference number, but an agency may require the physical original when releasing the car. Ask explicitly rather than relying on a general online answer.
Can someone book for another person?
It depends on the service and offer. The person making the booking, main driver and payment cardholder may need to be the same person. Have the exact arrangement approved before payment.
Should documents be sent in advance?
Only use the channel specified by the verified agency or platform. Do not send sensitive identity documents in response to an unsolicited message. Confirm the recipient, share only necessary data and retain proof that the file was received. Never disclose a PIN, banking verification code or full card image.
Does a confirmed booking guarantee pickup?
A confirmation reserves the offer under stated conditions; it does not waive document checks. If the driver cannot present the required originals, payment method or evidence, the agency may apply its contract. This is why written verification before travel matters.
The short answer
At a minimum, prepare the accepted driving licence, a valid identity document, the booking confirmation and the agreed payment method. Add any evidence requested for your driver profile and every additional driver. The best protection against a refusal at the counter is an early written check with the rental company. Clear originals, matching names and a carefully reviewed contract make pickup considerably smoother.
